H-shaped steel is an economical steel with more optimized cross-sectional distribution, more reasonable strength-to-weight ratio, and better cross-sectional mechanical properties.

H-shaped steel is an economical steel with more optimized cross-sectional distribution, more reasonable strength-to-weight ratio, and better cross-sectional mechanical properties. It is an economical steel with better cross-sectional mechanical properties developed from the optimization of I-shaped steel. Because its cross-section is the same as the English letter "H", it is named H-shaped steel. Since the parts of H-shaped steel are arranged at right angles, it has the advantages of strong bending resistance, simple construction, cost saving, and light weight of the structure in all directions, so it has been widely used.
H-shaped steel is a new type of economical building steel. The cross-sectional shape of H-shaped steel is economical and reasonable, with good mechanical properties, uniform elongation at each point on the cross-section, and small internal stress. Compared with ordinary I-shaped steel, it has the advantages of larger cross-sectional modulus, lighter weight, and metal saving, which can reduce the building structure by 30-40%. And because its legs are parallel inside and outside, and the leg ends are at right angles, they can be assembled into components, which can save up to 25% of welding and riveting work. It is often used in large buildings (such as workshops, high-rise buildings, etc.), as well as bridges, ships, lifting and transportation machinery, equipment foundations, brackets, piles, etc.
The national standard for hot-rolled H-shaped steel (GB/T11263-1998) divides H-shaped steel into narrow flange, wide flange and steel pile, with the codes hz, hk and hu respectively. Narrow flange H-shaped steel is suitable for beams or bending members, while wide flange H-shaped steel and H-shaped steel are suitable for axial compression members or bending members.
